Reviewing a collection of (often) free software & websites

There no intention of giving a compete overview of available free software. This is the stuff I use and trust, many for years, some for decades. Always evaluate the software before installation to make sure that is is still free software. Careful to never install toolbars & additional software. Btw, this website is made with NetObjects Fusion.

Reference websites for webmasters:

Free software to build websites with:

Personally, I believe that it is a good idea for advanced webbuilders, to BUY a html generator because the free versions simply lack the nowadays tools to bring a site alive. On the other hand, if you only need a static existence on the web, free software will do.

Amazing what you get for your money. It lacks absolutely nothing to make a stable and functional website. I’ve been using it for more than a decade. Is it the best software available? Yes and no. Yes for it’s value. No because there is better software that costs ten times the price.

In the not so old days known as Macromedia. They are the makers of Flash! Not Flash Gordon, but the standard that makes websites come alive. They have the nec-plus-ultra set of tools for webbuilders and publishers with cash: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, and a dousaine other expensive pieces of brilliant software.

Filezilla is about the lightest and yet full amps open source solution.
Brilliant piece of software that I use almost every day of the year.

Copy an entire website from the Web for off-line use.

WebReaper (crawler/spider) is a brilliant kitchen table product that exists for years and has not found it’s freeware match yet. Downloads all that is in and around a website.

HT Track does the same and exists for any kinda operating system.

AuditMyPC Sitemap Generator

    Let’s you create a site map in XML of HTML to load on your server for search engines purposes.

AM-Deadlink:

    Detects dead links and duplicates in browser bookmarks and text files. If a bookmark has become unavailable you can verify and delete it permanently.

How to fight SPAM bots?

    AuditMyPc Anti Spam has a simple technique to bulk their mailing lists, obliging them to clean them out, or making their lists worthless for reselling purposes. I believe that it is easy to avoid by spambot developers, but if it does not work, it does not hurt. (See below this page.)

How to protect your mail address on a webpage?

    Again, there is never a guaranty that a spambot developer won’t find a way around, but it is better than raw text.

  • XDenser Safe Mailto: places your email address into a gif image and slightly spoils it to be unrecognizable by OCR. Safe Mailto also generates HTML code that allows users visiting your page to email you just by clicking on image with your email address.
  • Codefoot E.Cloaker : converts the characters of email addresses and text into browser-readable Unicode, making it more difficult (not impossible) for spam extractor 'bots to harvest email addresses from your web page.

Include RSS feeds into a website :

Monitoring links & terms on the internet (about your website?)

JAlbum : Make a photo album and load it to a webserver.

    Use this setup for watermarking:
    4th tabpage (advanced) > User defined variables:
    Filter 1 class=WatermarkFilter strengthPercent=50 text=" © myname"
    color=#aaffaa face="Verdana" style=bold size=10 antialias=true valign=bottom
    margin=5 closeups
